Grace Jerk Fest serves up fun and flavour

The time-honoured culinary tradition of jerk was richly celebrated in Queens, New York on July 19, as thousands of patrons descended on Roy Wilkins Park to indulge their palates and enjoy quality entertainment at the annual Grace Jamaican Jerk Festival. The event was staged in an atmosphere abounding in colour, culture and camaraderie, and the programme featured an engaging mix of exhibitions, demonstrations, competitions and live performances.

The Celebrity Quick Fire Challenge proved to be one of the marquee attractions on the day, as New York Mayor Bill de Blasio squared off against Kaci Fennell, Miss Universe Jamaica 2014. Mayor de Blasio mounted a successful defence of the title he won at the festival two years ago, impressing the judges with his New York Jerk Chicken “Swagga” Sandwich.

Musical performances on the main stage by Fab 5 Band, Carlene Davis, Cham and Romain Virgo were well received by the crowd. New dancehall sensation Gully Bop made the briefest of cameos during Cham’s set as a teaser for the upcoming North American leg of his “Rags to Riches” tour.

The Grace Jamaican Jerk Festival is New York’s largest Caribbean food event. It is produced by Jamaican Jerk Festival U.S.A. Inc. and VP Records, and is sponsored by Western Union, Continental Bakery, Vitamalt and Tower Isle Frozen Foods.
